Plantable now

Still plantable in May

May is the big moving-out month, when the heat-loving plants can finally go into the bed. After the mid-May frosts the danger is over, and that's when I plant out tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers and beans with real anticipation.

Common questions

When can I plant out tomatoes and courgettes?
After the mid-May frosts, around the 15th, because by then the risk of late frost is largely gone. I'd rather wait a few days too long than lose a whole young plant to the cold.
Is it too late to sow in May?
Not at all, in May you can sow beans, squash, sweetcorn and plenty of salads directly. The warm soil gets everything germinating really quickly now.
