All starting points
In-ground bed: from lawn to vegetables
Gardening in the ground takes little material but some groundwork. I show you what your starting point really needs.
What ends up on your list
- Tools for the groundwork if you do it yourself, none if you don’t.
- Soil improvement by area: compost, mulch or green manure.
- Protection and edging by size, for example a roll instead of single pieces.
Works as a gift too: a spade, a fork and a plan make a pretty honest present.

Quick questions
- Dig the lawn or cover it?
- Both work. Digging is quick; covering with cardboard and mulch is kinder to soil life and takes longer. The wizard asks about your starting point.
- Do I need a rotavator?
- Not necessarily. For big areas you can hire one. I mention it as a hint, not a must.
