Raised bed: what you need for the first year
For a first raised bed the kit is not the hard part. Everything around it is: filling, protection from voles, watering. I work that out from your size.
What ends up on your list
- The filling in layers: coarse material at the bottom, compost in the middle, soil on top, in litres and bags.
- Protection that fits your location and size, like vole mesh in the garden or fleece for spring.
- Watering as you like it: watering can, drip set or drip set with timer.
Works as a gift too: a bed to give away is a list that is already done.

Quick questions
- How tall should a raised bed be?
- From 40 cm you are fine. At 80 cm you work standing up and spare your back, but you need that much more filling.
- Do I have to buy the coarse material?
- No. Branches and hedge trimmings from your own garden work too. Choose “collect myself” in the wizard and I leave it out of the total.
