Plantable now
Still plantable in February
February is the month when the windowsill slowly starts buzzing and the first seed trays find their spot. Too late for nothing, quite the opposite: tomatoes, peppers and herbs can be pre-grown now, and on mild days the bed loosens up enough for the earliest sowings.
Start indoors only
Begin on the windowsill, move to the bed later.

Plan a bedCommon questions
- What can I pre-grow indoors in February?
- I like to start tomatoes, peppers and chillies warm in February, because they need a head start. A bright spot matters, otherwise the seedlings grow long and spindly.
- Can I already sow outdoors in February?
- On frost-free days you can, under fleece or in a cold frame, for tough crops like spinach or broad beans. I prefer to wait until the soil has dried out a little, otherwise the seed clumps up.
