Plantable now

Still plantable in January

January is my favourite planning month, because everything outside is resting and I can calmly work out what belongs in the bed this year. Too early to begin? Not at all: you can already pre-grow the first heat-loving crops on the windowsill, and under fleece even a few tough salads dare to go outdoors.

Outdoors is on a break

Nothing goes straight into the bed this month. A perfect time to plan next year.

Common questions

Can I really sow anything in January?
Yes, on a warm windowsill I start chillies and aubergines early because they need a long growing season. In the bed itself, a fleece cover helps a few hardy crops survive the cold.
Is January planning actually worth it?
Absolutely, because settling your crop rotation and sowing dates now saves you the spring rush. I always sketch my bed in January, so by March I know exactly what goes where.
