Plantable now

Still plantable in October

In October calm settles over the bed, the last summer fruits come in and the soil gets ready for its winter rest. Yet it's still not too late: garlic and winter salads want to go in now, and a good cover protects the bed through the cold season.

Common questions

Can I still plant anything in October?
Yes, October is the classic time to plant garlic and overwintering onion sets so they can be harvested next summer. Lamb's lettuce and hardy salads also still root well now.
How do I make the raised bed winter-ready?
I clear away spent crops and cover the bare soil with leaves or mulch so it doesn't wash out. In hard frost, a fleece gives the hardy crops extra protection.
