Plantable now

Still plantable in September

September is my reconciling month, when the harvest turns out generous and the air grows pleasantly cool again. And although summer is bowing out, it's by no means over: winter salads, spinach and lamb's lettuce sown now overwinter in the bed and take off in spring.

Common questions

What can I still plant in September?
In September I like to set out lamb's lettuce, winter spinach, winter lettuce and the first garlic cloves. Much of it overwinters and gives the first fresh harvest in early spring.
Should I already prepare the bed in September?
Yes, I cover bare patches with a green manure or mulch so the soil doesn't leach out. That keeps a raised bed protected through winter and ready to go in spring.
